About Canvas Psychological

A canvas, a raw sheet of material, is intriguing to me with regard to how to approach treatment. Canvas Psychological is intentionally named for how I approach working with you and how I would like you to feel received as a client – as a canvas of existing strengths that we can add to, expand upon and continue to shape. I think of the process of beginning treatment with a client as an opportunity to create something meaningful. That meaning is uniquely informed by your strengths, your goals and your vision for yourself.

I fully embrace the power of how we experience and what we experience. We can be more than recipients of experiences – we can also be creators of new ones. Let’s begin creating and experiencing!

*John Lock, a 17th Century, English, philosopher proposed his understanding of the human mind in his 1689 work An Essay Concerning Human Understanding.  He is famously cited for proposing that the mind at birth is a tabula rasa (a blank slate) that we fill with ‘ideas’ as we experience the world through the five senses.  I fully embrace the power behind our experiences as a formative part of who we are throughout our life.  There’s something freeing about the idea that we can be more than recipients of experiences– we can also be creators of new ones.  Let’s begin creating and experiencing!

Meet your Provider

Dr. Simone Andrews

Dr. Simone Andrews is a NYS licensed psychologist.  She is founder of Canvas Psychological P.C. and currently the primary treatment provider for the practice.  She received her undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology from New York University (NYU), Masters of Arts in Developmental Psychology from Teacher’s College Columbia University and her Doctorate of Psychology in Child/School Psychology from NYU.  Prior to receiving her doctorate, Dr. Simone worked in foster care, community settings, and hospital settings providing individual therapy, counseling, and cognitive/emotional assessments or evaluations to primarily children and adolescents.  Soon after receiving her doctorate in 2012 she began working exclusively with an adult outpatient population for a state psychiatric facility, where she received supervision in providing therapy for a diagnostically diverse population of adult clients diagnosed with a range of mild to severe mental illness. Dr. Simone’s work with children and families informed her approach to working in this setting where she applied an understanding of family systems, development, experiential learning, and her training as an intensively trained DBT clinician to this population. She also lead trainings in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and built a DBT adherent program within the adult outpatient department. Dr. Simone has been working in private practice since 2017 as an independent practitioner. She prides herself in drawing from her professional and personal experiences to provide a culturally grounded treatment in an engaging and responsive way. Her work with her clients can range from insight oriented to experiential, drawing upon client’s strengths, evidence-based practices, and their world view.
